If I remember correctly we airlifted a couple of H-19's out of Germany down via C-124 and the troops from Spain may have flown theirs across the straights. We had several birds down there and it was a mess for quite awhile.
On one mission during the flood Al Heeter and I were flying together and were picking up people by hoist from rooftops. We picked up this one guy and when the crew chief got him in the cabin and about the time we were on the go he looked around the cabin and dove out the door back into the water and swam back to his house. Guess he didn't like helicopters.
We also dropped cases of C rations to groups on high ground. They couldn't figure out how to get the church key to work on the cans so we had to put a crew chief on the ground to show them how to open the cans. (John Flournoy)
